My four year old maine **** has just been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in his right elbow. While we wait for a referal on to an orthopaedic surgeon my vet has started him on glucosamine sprinkle capsules. Has anybody else used glucosamine for OA for their pet and if so did you find it helped? Many thanks
I know a lot of dog owners who use it for various joint problems in their pets. You can use the human version, which is cheaper at places like Holland and Barrett.
Oh no don't go to H & B, asdas have started doing their own brand hero range chews that are called joint ease and they contain glucosamine AND chondroitin, both of wehich my vet said my dog Bingo needed as supplements in his diet and he told me about these new chews, i think i saw the cat version and it is about 1,70 for 7 chews.
The chews contain such a small amount that they are hardly worth getting (although my dogs love them as they do denta sticks, but just as treats!) For actual pain relief I would recommend the full blown stuff.
My 18 year cat has arthritis in both back legs. I use a cat Glucasamine with Chondrolin capsule for him daily. I only buy the CAPSULES because they can be opened and the powder sprinkled on PART of his food, ( he doesn't realise he is eating it on a small part of his food!). These capsules have certainly helped him, he seems to move much more freely now. I purchase the capsules on-line from vitamins direct, and a 8 month supply cost me 15. this is FAR cheaper than purchasing them from a vets. Hope this information helps.
Thanks Auntiemoll. I have just looked on Vitamins Direct and they are so much cheaper than the ones from the vets (40 per pot!!!) and they have similar amounts of glucosamine and chondrolin.
I am so pleased to hear that they help your 18 year old cat. I hope they will do the same for my 4 year old x
