Fluid collecting on knee/thigh

I was involved in a car crash on 2nd October and one of the parts affected in the crash was a whack to my right knee. As time passed after the crash the bruising on the outside of my knee started moving up toward my mid-thigh and then started to fade. However there was also a bit of swelling that developed in my thigh. Now it seems to move between my thigh and my knee depending on whether I am standing up or not. It is quite large (about the size of my knee) and feels as if it is mainly fluid filled.

My questions are firstly, has the fluid collected because of my bodys attempt to protect the injured area? And secondly, will it disperse/disappear by itself in its own good time?

1) yes
2) might do or might not.

It sounds as though you had sever bruising and the blood clot in the area you have described has liquified and has formed a "blood cyst" either below the skin or in the muscle itself.

It might just disappear given time.
It might become infected....pain, redness etc and hence need draining.

You are fine unless it does become red and painful.

Thanks sqad. It felt warm last night which made me think it might be a sign that it could be becoming infected, however it is not so warm today. It is painful, but it has been since the crash. It is not red.
I will keep an eye on it but I def don't fancy having to have it drained - yipes!

PS - Is there anything I can do to make it less likely to become infected?
Is it better to keep the fluid moving, or better to keep it as still as possible?

Act perfectly normally?! I wish - the knee is only one of a heap of my bits that got walloped! I'm creakling around like a bashed and bruised weeble!
