I can buy antibiotics from a pharmacy in Europe but not in the UK. Why is the sale of antibiotics over the counter not possible in the UK. Can they be bought from the internet.

smith....yes, this anomaly has been in existence for almost half a century and like you it completely confuses me.

The medical profession in the UK is far more conservative than in the rest of Europe and that may contribute to this anomaly.

You can buy antibiotics on the internet but make sure that it is a reputable website.
you can buy antibiotics from here:

:D
Why would anyone want to buy antibiotics over the internet? If you have been diagnosed with a bacterial infection then your GP will provide you with a prescription for them, even if you pay for your prescription it will invariably be cheaper to get them this way than buying them on the web and paying postage costs.
If you have an illness serious enough to warrant a course of antibiotics, surely it would make sense to see a clinician and get them prescribed . In general i think as a society we probably oversubscribe antibiotics anyway, and self treating doesnt really help to control that.

The reason I asked this question was that I was in Madeira recently and realised that I was starting to have tonsillitis (I knew this because I have had tonsillitis many times before and know the symptoms well) I went to a pharmacy, bought amoxicillan for 3.25 euros and everything was fine.
My point is why not be able to do this in the UK instead of having to phone the GP surgery, hold on to the phone for 20 minutes, be given a same day appointment only to have to wait two hours to see a doctor.
smithbird.....why not indeed?

€3.5 is about £3......a lot cheaper than a prescription charge........do you think that that has anything to do with it????????????
