Daily disposable contact lenses
6 Answers
Had an appointment recently at the opticians about getting contact lenses. I have had to have reading glasses for the past couple of years but notice that my eyesight is not quite what it used to be and a lot of things have blurry images now. Asked about daily disposable lenses but was quoted £33 a month, to include lenses, solutions and aftercare. Thought this was quite expensive, I couldn't afford that much anyway, and opted for the monthly disposable ones instead at £18 per month. Have tried these now for a week and hate faffing about with the cleaning and solution, etc. Would love the daily disposables and have seen them on the internet for about £10 a month but would rather get them through an optician if possible.
Are the prices I've quoted reasonable, or have I just gone to a rather expensive optician?

They will always be cheaper on line because you are only paying for the lenses and not for shop overheads or anything extra such as the professional time taken to fit the lenses and continue to assess the health of your eyes at the aftercare appointments.
If you have only just started to wear lenses then you may need several appointments in the first year to monitor your eye health and lens use. If you have to pay for these appointments then obviously this will increase the cost. Also if you have any other problems at anytime you will be expected to pay for any extra tests.
With daily disposable lenses you are paying for convenience and this is why they can be double the price of monthlies but you can get them from some places cheaper than others. Specsavers and Asda tend to do them from about 20 pounds for thirty pairs and their monthly ones from about 10 pounds per month. These prices include aftercares and solutions whenever necessary.

I wear daily disposables and used to get them online from a site called contactlenses.co.uk
If you buy 2 or 3 months at a time it works out cheaper, and you can find out from the optician which lenses you wear. You can then choose an opticians who offer free eye tests and ask then to do a contact lens check on you as well (although you will probably have to pay for that)
By the way, if they are daily disposables you don't need solutions, they come in little individual pods with a tiny amount of saline in them so don't bother with solutions, you'll never need them!
