Insulin user v vaccine
1 Answers
My wife has been a Type 1 diabetic for 33 years (now aged 59) who uses two different types of insulin, one is Humalog and the other Hypurin Porcine Isophane, since the porcine insulin is derived from pigs (swine), do either of the two available vaccines (Pandemrix or Celapan) have a likelihood of reacting with her medication (insulin) or does one make pose additional risks or advantages over the other?
We have put off having the vaccine as we both feel the development of these new drugs have been rushed and not FULLY tested.
Any help gratefully accepted.

I can think of no biologically plausible mechanism by which these would interact. On the other hand, Several recent studies have shown that, of those patients globally who have been hospitalised, ie severely affected by swine flu, a significant proportion of those have diabetes as an underlying chronic health condition. However, you really should be consulting with a GP on an issue like this.
Pandemrix vs Celvapan - The main difference is that Pandemrix offers immunization from just one shot. For Celvapan, you have to have 2, at least 3 weeks apart. Celvapan is only really of benefit if you have an egg or egg related allergy - Celvapan is not cultured in eggs, unlike Pandemrix.
Safety and efficacy testing of the swine flu vaccines. Their production has not been rushed. What tests do you feel have not been carried out?
I would strongly urge you to consult with your GP before you make a decision on whether to receive the vaccine or not, rather than taking opinion from a forum.
