My mum has a had a stroke this afternoon and is in the hospital,wont find out for a couple of days how bad it was,anyone had someone who has had one and what is the procedure regarding care when she comes out of hospital she is 81

Sorry to hear that poodi. One of my family members had a mini-stroke (TIA) last year but is well again now but on lifelong medication. I think it depends how severe the stroke was and what sort of stroke, as to how much recovery is made and there are any lasting changes. I hope for both of you that your mum will be OK.

Thank you boxtops such a shock was at my house earlier on,i had to go to work,luckily she got a lift with my son and his friend when my son stepped out of the car and started to talk to her no reponse eyes not focusing and one side of her body was floppy so glad my son was with her

The fact that she was taken in quickly is so much in her favour, as some poor people have a stroke at home and aren`t found till the next day. Don`t be afraid to ask lots of questions at the hospital and demand the best care they can give.

I am 24 and suffered a stroke 6 weeks ago, it was a large blood clot to the brain. Usual procedure after a stroke is to put the person on statins and blood thinners for the rest of their life, especially if they're older as their arteries are more likely to have furred. With the severity of the after-effects that is sounds like your mum is having, she will probably be in hospital a while. Stroke patients are kept in hospital and given an occupational therapist to help them recover mobility and strength. When she is able to move better and possibly the paralysis is recovering, then she would be allowed home, and be referred to the community stroke team. The would come to assess herself and her home to see what ongoing care and improvements (the home not your mum!) she would need. like help getting in/out of the bath/bed, stairlift's, panic buttons e.t.c. The community stroke team will visit her every week and offer support and advise on other services that also may help. She may be be re-housed if her home is no longer safe for her to live in. Don't worry she won't just be dumped as soon as she gets out of hospital! Hope this helps and wishing her a speedy recovery. xXx

Poodicat, Just to let you know that my husband has had 3 strokes. After the first two he was left with some weakness in one hand. After the last it affected his balance a bit. He is on medication for life. I hope things go well for your mum. As someone else said the quicker they are treated the better the long term outlook.

just to let you know I had my stroke at 8am, didn't get to the hospital until 10.30am apparently and then they had to do scans first to see what type of stroke it was, then they could treat it. It seems like a long time before treatment I know but I recovered fully and have been left with only slight memory problems. So don't worry too much you have a bit of time before it gets very disabling during a stroke.... if that makes sense?....

My wife had a mild stroke about a year and a half ago.She partially lost the use of her left arm and leg and some slight slurring of speech. I got her to hospital as quickly as I could but once there we waited for three or four hours before she was seen to. However once she was assesed as a stroke victim she was admitted and spent 12 days in hospital while various tests were carried out to find the cause of the stroke, ( oxygen deprivation?). She is now at home and 99.9% recovered ( she still nags me). The good thing that came out of this is that she has given up smoking which apparently is a big contributer to strokes. She is now on lifelong medication but aren't we all on one way or another!... I hope all goes well for you poodicat .S.O.G
