Your post on leptosprosis reminded me of when I was at med school. My hero was a guy called Dr Donald Hunter and although I have noticed in a previous post about younger consultants being more compassionate, but the older consultants had character and personality, rarely seen today. Anyway, back to the story:
One morning on one of his ward rounds with 20+ students, he walked us all out of the hospital and down the Whitechapel Road. We stopped at a manhole cover and it was pushed open by a guy who retorted "Is that you Dr Hunter? we all climbed down into the sewers of Whitechapel and when we got amongst the foul smelling excreta, he said
"Now gentleman, what is the subject for today?" Silence all round.
Answer...leptospirosis ictera haemorrhagica an infection spread in the urine of rats.
