Pregant after previous miscarriage
11 Answers
My husband and I suffered a miscarriage back in August, but am very pleased that on Friday night pregnancy test confirmed I am pregnant again which we are both very excited about. By my calculation I am 8 weeks but as you can imagine from our previous experience we are both a little nervous that everthing is ok...
I believe the usual first scan is at 12 weeks, but do you think based on my earlier miscarriage we would be able to have a scan now just for some reassurance that I am pregnant and also everything is ok? I know the pregnancy tests are very accurate but previously when I fell pregnant, the day i did my test, i also started to bleed which we subsequenelty learnt was the start of the miscarriage so as you can tell we just need some reassuances.
I have tried to phone the doctors but the earliest they can see me is Thursday and then thought myabe i dont actually need to see a doctor just need their advise, so expecting a call in the morning to discuss, but would just if anyone else that has been though similar could offer some advise. Many thanks

sending love and hugs. an early scan would be reassuring, so politely request it!!
please relax and remember that there is nothing you can do either way other than rest and don't get agitated). it is most likely to be a perfectly normal pregnancy and you should enjoy it.

I dont honestly know if we have a midwifery team, we have a very small village doctors surgery. I dont mind seeing a doctor but as they always seem so busy and its near on impossible to ever get an apointment I thought having a chat with doctor maybe a quicker way to get some advise! They would have my details from previously, although again back In August, i never got as far as seeing a doctor, when i started to bleed i rang to speak to a doctor, who just booked me straight in at hospital for a scan, and when that scan confirmed I had miscarried, I then didnt have any need in going to doctors. Its silly really but if i can just see someone who can confirm the pregnancy and confirm everything is ok this time, i can relax a little. Its all new to me so i dont know who i should be seeing and or in what order!
As Redcrx says, speak with your GP who can advise of your nearest midwifery team. Regardless of where you are situated your GP must be able to refer you to the appropriate medical facility nearest to you to get checked out. During your pregnancy you will be given many appointments to see your GP and a midwife for blood tests, blood pressure and to see that everything is going smoothly.

We went through several miscarriages, including an ectopic one......and that isn't pleasant but our Gynae managed to catch it before the wife ended up on the floor.
What you realise is (i) there is a very high percentage of women who have experienced this (so you are not alone) and (ii) that it is nature (or God's way if you believe), of handling imperfect situations....
We had two perfectly healthy babies - yes you are nervous and especially in that 8 to 14 week area - however, even a smidge of blood does not mean a thing as it is possible to have a phantom period.
However, if you feel a check-over is necessary, then do go and see the doctor - they will be very sympathetic given your past history.
Good luck and try and relax and enjoy the experience.....hope the morning sickness is not too bad!

Hi CC,
I had a miscarriage earlier this year, then a few weeks later fell pregnant again. I too was very worried, but I didn't expect to receive an early scan or anything, just due to miscarriages being so common, and as sqad says, it won't prevent a miscarriage from occurring in the future.
Instead, I looked after myself as well as I could, did everything textbook, plenty of rest, minimise stress, avoided certain foods, extra vitamins etc. I accepted the miscarriage because like DT, I believe that it is nature's way of handling serious problems in the development of the baby, and just hoped that second time around, we would be more fortunate.
I did, however, buy a doppler, as I remember years ago when pregnant with my daughter, I hated the part between 12-20 weeks when morning sickness went, and I felt no movement, so it helped reassure me she was still there.

Hi and congratulations. You may or may not be entitled to have an early scan, your GP/midwife would tell you that but you could pay privately for one. However like a few other people have said it may set your mind at rest at the time of the scan but in reality it doesn't mean any guarantees that everything will definitely be ok this time. I think the best thing to do would be to relax as much as you can and look after yourself and hopefully this time you will be fine. Take care.
As has already been said, an early scan will confirm the pregnancy and that it is viable at that point, it cannot do any more than that or predict likelihood of pregnancy continuing. Where I work in Scotland, this is not done other than at the early pregnancy unit if people have symptoms such as pain and bleeding.
So a little update... we went for our first scan today and good news was there is a pregnancy and it was showing in the right place :). Working on the sizing, we were advised we were just under 6wks + 5 days pregnant - so not as far as long as I thought (as I had been using my LMP of 9th October making me just over 10 weeks so i thought.)I did have some bleeding 1st Nov which i put down to implantation bleeding but was told this could have been a light period and would take this as LMP based on the size of the pregnancy. We were told we had a bright ring around the sack which was a good sign and weve been asked to go back again in about 10 days when i should be over 8 weeks and they should be able to see more. Whats worrying me now is i) in my head becuase i had taken my Ocotber period as my last proper period and i should be further along, im worried that as the baby showed smaller than i thought it should be could it have stopped growing a few weeks ago - if that was the case would I have had any signs? Previously when I miss-carried it was a very early one and I dont think it even implanted so i bled very early. Currently in this pregnancy ive had no spotting or bleeding, had all the other usual symptoms - morning sickness, frequent weeing etc so wodering is it possible to misscarry and not know it?? Secondly, i didnt really think about this at the scan as i was just greatful to see a pregnancy but after reading up on the internent, many sites mention seeing a heartbeat at around 6 weeks - our sonographer didnt mention this either way so not sure whether she was looking and didnt find it - wouldnt she have mentioned this? or not sure whether she was even looking for this becuase it was so early, but shouldnt she have seen/ heard this as im more than 6 weeks? Sorry for all the questions but all a little unsure in my head at the moment.
