I am trying to purchase the freehold on my property but the solicitors acting for the landlord is charging three times as much as the solicitor acting on my behalf. Is there more work involved in selling the freehold than there is in purchasing. We have to pay the landlords legal fees and I don't want to proceed unless I find out why the difference in costs.

no, if anything they are less, so I'd say he's ripping the aris out of it! You have to pay his fees but I'm not sure if you have any control over how much or who he hires.
Agree with that - there is more legal work in buying than selling.
But then, since when has the price charged for anything had any bearing on the costs involved? - the best way to bring prices down is through competition.
