Tips on jogging

I'm quite fit, even though I don't really excercise. But today I'm going to start jogging, then swimming and the gym in the next few weeks.
What tips would you give on jogging?
Distance to run, warm down, eating before/after, take water with you... etc??

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.first things first get some proper running shoes, ideally fitted from a proper running shop but for casual running you can get decent pairs from sports shops. Asics, Mizuno and New Balance are all good brands for running shoes, I wear adidas 'cus I've got wide feet.
Start off gently, maybe round a local park, jog at a pace at which you could have a conversation and stop whenever you want, although don't actually stop, just walk.
I usually run for about 10 mins, then have a stretch, before carrying on, although my grandad who's 88 and is today entering the Liverpool half marathon never stretches so that may depend on how you're feeling. Take water if you;re going far enough.
Basically, don't over exert yourself early doors, you want to be enjoying it, so maybe choose a nice sunny time to start.

I don't warm up, but I always stretch off, and always run with my ipod - I have an ipod shuffle specifically for running so all the tunes are upbeat, it really helps me to keep going. I also always try and go a bit further each time, even just a little bit so I feel I have pushed myself and I always finish off with a good sprint ! Enjoy :)
Do you really need to jog if you're doing all the other exercise. Jogging is quite stressful on the knees and can lead to permanent injury. What about something with no impact like rowing or cycling? If you're determined to jog then do get proper jogging shoes not some fashion item, if you go out in the dark do wear a reflective tabard, also take note of pa's and lcds posts.
You should always try to eat before a run and wait about an hour and a half before setting off (although I perfer to wake up, throw on my gear and head straight out or else il not do anything for the rest of the day!) Make sure you down a pint of water afterwards but Id say the main things you need for running are a proper pair of running shoes that support your ankle joints and the motivation to go out there and push yourself... but go easy when you first start out and build up your distance and speed very graudally as if you increase too quickly, thats when injuries will set in and wil prob plague you for a long time. Id also consider joining a running group, im thinking of doing the same as just having someone next to you is massive motivation. Happy Jogging!!

Dont eat a heavy meal before jogging, indigestion and/or a stitch will end the run out.
Perhaps a glucose dring 30mins before starting, and water during the run if possible.
As a warm down, slow the pace when you are half a mile from home and stretch afterwards as well.
A low carb, high protein drink may be considered to help with recovery.
If you are anything like me, you may start cramping up when you take up serious jogging, I always relax in a radox bath to ease muscles after a run.
