We belong to a gym chain and our local club has suddenly closed because they say the fees due to the leaseholder are too expensive. My husband and I have recently paid up front for an annual membership. The company says that we can use the next nearest club. However this is about 25 miles from where we live and not at all pratical because of cost, time and also I do not have regular access to a car. I could walk to my local gym in just a few minutes. Do I have any comeback? If anyone can help, I would be very grateful.

What have the gym said?
This happened to my husband a while back. I cancelled the dd and refused to pay even though they had said he could use an alternative gym and his membership had been transfered there. As you have paid upfront it may be difficult to get the money back. I would go to the CAB. After we received several threatning letters I got my friend (who works in a solicitors) to send one back informing them they had breached their terms and conditions of the contract not me and we never heard anything since. I would look into taking them to the small claims court as a last resort. You need to speak to them and see what they say.
It seems harsh but it may depend on the terms of the contract you signed- maybe there was a provsion for this.
