Loss of Blood

I believe the average content of blood in an adult is 8 pints.
If a person gives a pint of blood how soon does the body replentish ie 1 week, 1 month, or what?
During that time is the body able to cope FULLY with any demands on it or could it be compared to a car engine running with oil below the dipstick mark?

After giving blood once, I was walking to the station when I realised there aws a train due very soon.
I forgot what I had just done, and sprinted to the station. Once sitting on the train I remembered that I probably shouldn't have done that.
(By the way, they don't take a pint - I think it is more like three quarters of one)
