Why are some people so

grumpy .
In our little street over the last few months , there has been extensive demolition and re -building of a property. There has been some inconvience and mess , but the local builders have been fantastic in making things safe and tidy at the end of each day.
The work is now finished and looks good, improving the whole area.
The new occupiers, a young couple and their parents have given us all an invitation to a tea-time buffet, next week to say thank you, and hello to us all .
Am going to go for a little while because I want to meet our new neighbours and it would seem churlish to me not to do so.
My immediate neighbour is not going because she says" it will take more than a sandwich to get round her"
Have told her that I think she is being a miserable old woman .Find her attitude rather a negative one and am surprised by this, but.the choice is hers .
I'll have her sandwich anyway !!!!!

People don't like change and they don't like 'new' people. That's all it is. Plus, there's the status issue - 'I've lived here longer than you' - which shows up in your neighbour's remark about 'getting round' her. She believes the new person is trying to win her allegiance rather than simply accepting a neighbourly gesture.
Eat her sandwich - and tell her how good it was.

We have after many years got planning permission on some land we own. The housing cannot be seen from the road, but the anger and nastiness of some of the neighbours has been amazing and some of the letters of objection to the site have been beyond belief and quite venemous.
Methinks a lot of it is pure jealousy. Fortunately they are not my neighbours! (although one of my neighbours is actually a total nasty madman!!)

Perhaps the trick is not to be judgemental. Seems to me that there is a point in what she says. She's put up with a lot that she had no say in, in the recent past, and doesn't see why should be all sweetness & light for a sandwich. It's a reasonable position to take. You see things differently. You were not overly put out tolerating the renovation, and see the get together as a nice gesture. That is also valid. But it indicates you were affected differently by what occurred.
Good for you telling your neighbour, and the new ones sound delightful! Unfortunately there are some people who aren't happy unless they're moaning or being nasty and negative. So, it would take 'More than a sandwich to get round her' - 'get round her' for what, exactly? Havng to look at a bit of an eyesore for a few days? - Goodness how sad for the woman! And how lucky she is that's all she's got to worry about!
