It is extremely common. They are thousands of tiny cysts on your ovaries. They can affect your periods, although not always. Lots of people who have them are told they may have difficulty having children but this has not been the case in the people I have known.

My mum was told that she didnt have it by her doctor as the common sypmtoms are being overweight, hairy and spotty, but she had none of these. She was then given an ultra sound and they found that she did have it so these "classic" symptoms are not always shown....thank God!

thanks for that. My doctor suspects that and I am just waiting for blood tests. she didnt really tell me anything about it but Im pleased to hear it doesnt mean that you can't have children full stop.

I have polycystic ovarian syndrome :(  I am only 18 but had lots of the classic symptoms. . . I had the scan which revealed that one of my ovaries had the cysts.

However, you can have polycystic ovaries without having the syndrome (having no other syptoms).

A lot of people can have trouble conceiving but I think it's quite rare and there are two forms of medication called Clomid and Metformin that can help with severe symptoms or trouble getting pregnant.

I have been on the Pill (Dianette) for 6 months now and a lot of my symptoms have improved  :)
