Irrelevant answers to serious questions
21 Answers
Is there any way that a reply that doesn't in any way answer the original question can be removed from the thread? I very often find that a completely irrelevant reply to a serious question has been posted. This immediately has the effect of removing the "Unanswered" tag from this question and probably means that the question is then ignored by other, potentially helpful, respondents.

If you post in the relevant category, more often than not you will get sensible replies. On chatterbank, people do just that - chatter about everyday things and daft things do get posted. I do understand what you are saying and I am probably as guilty of this as anyone. If you find this annoying, I for one, apologize.

Don't know about others, but I am more likely to respond to a question IF it appears in the latest posts column. Unless I look specifically, the only time I see unanswered questions is when I first come here. So ANY answer to a question is just gonna raise awareness to the existence of the question.
I will look at questions that already have an answer because the answer that's been given may be wrong (or irrelevant)
I think you'll find that most serious users of the site don't look at the unanswered questions, they look in the subjects they are interested/knowledgeable in and will look into any question that they think they can answer regardless of if it's been answered.
(There are a couple of exceptions, for example if I see a really simple question in tech and see that the last answer is from beunchico, or markrea (other techs are available) then I'll often assume that they have answered it correctly so don't bother looking)

If you ask a serious question in CB (some people do to get a quick hit which doen't always give the desired effect) then you expect a level of going off subject and general chit-chat. If you ask in the appropriate topic then generally you get users with specific interests/qualifications in that area who will give you the answers you are looking for. E.g. I rarely post in technology as I clearly don't belong there. I might post in B&S as occasionally I know the answer to a simple question or have a relevent opinion.
