It`s supposed to clean out the residue of food you have (supposedly) eaten that is stuck in your gut. When you have it done, all the contents of the intestines go down a tube and the therapist points out the bits that are supposed to be the remnants of that lovely Steak Diane you had 6 weeks ago. They say that your intestines can`t process the food and without colonic irrigation you will die of toxic poisoning. Sorry to be cynical but I think it is a waste of money. The human body is perfectly capable of doing it`s own detoxing.
The thing is, your bowel is like a good ol' compost heap, with bacteria that do good things and keep your waste processing on down the road till you expel it. If you wash 'em all oout, then opportunistic and not necessarily good bacteria might move in. Don't know if you watch embarrassing bodies, but recently a dear young women had been overdoing the douching and had developed candida on a huge scale. This is the sort of infection you risk by paying a stranger play whale music, burn a joss stick and shove a hose where it ain't intended.
If you think you're bunged up you've got the laxatives option, or get som glycerine suppositories - way cheaper than the hose, and also evaluate your diet including a good intake of water.
You can find some terrifying lies told about the benefits of hose-jobs, and these pills that claim to rid you of 'parasites' to make you thinner - lies all lies and bad for you as well.

Why would anyone pay for this service?
I had an enema before my second child was born (to re-start contractions that had stopped) and it was unpleasant to say the least! I had to hold this water in for 20 minutes then spent the next hour or so nor daring to leave the bathroom as I now had explosive diarrhea and really painful bowel cramps.
