My ongoing gynae problems

Went to see the consultant gynae at CRH yesterday and asked for the hysterectomy. She said she will not do it "because of my weight" (I'm 13 1/2 stone).

She didn't say how much I need to lose, I know I should be about 10 1/2, but I thought they only didn't do operations if you were really drastically overweight? Do I need to get to 10 1/2 before they'll consider it?

She said she will do the Novasure procedure and that they don't do the microwave ablation that I had last year anymore (which didn't work, in fact, has made my bleeding longer).

Looking it up, the Novasure seems to be the same as the microwave - is it? If it is, what is the point of having it again, when it hasn't worked the first time.

That may be the Consultant's call, Sqad, but the patient has every right to challenge that decision.

However there is an increase in post op complications if you are overweight and neither is it a good idea to lose weight just before surgery if you want to/need to lose weight first then allow at least 6 months between losing the weight and the surgery as there is also a link to increased post op morbidity following a signnificant loss of weight . I would definitely ask for a referral to another consultant We regularly had patients for this procedure who weighed up to around 15 stone only above that did we have problem and that was because the anaesthetist would block the op due to the risk issues...

Certainly they may, Sqad, but they won't know unless they try. If you are suffering acute and ongoing symptoms, you are not just going to take such decisions lying down.

I once had a doctor tell me that my Gynae problems were one of those things and I would just have to put up with it until I came to the menopause .
Well ,she was a dried up old prune which was very plain to see .
I sought a second opinion and within six weeks had it all whipped out .
It's no fun walking about losing your lifes blood for weeks and months on end and I sympathise with you Halifaxmum .Get a second opinion .
The second doctor I saw was shocked at how I was and I was referred forthwith .I was having to sit on a plastic bag losing lumps of what looked like liver at times . It was horrible and going to work was awful and stressful .
I can't see what weight has to do with it .I was about eleven stone at the time .
Make a fuss and best wishes .I do hope you get a postive outcome .

Halifax I dont think that a different hospital away from the area would have your medical notes, but it could depend on what your GP writes in the second referral.
I hope things work out for you, this constant bleeding probably makes you feel weak and tired all the time,and depressed so lets hope they sort it for you.
