Ive been a Tory all my life but the way he is giving away money that should be spent in the UK disgusts me. This, combined with the award of the railway contract to Siemens is almost the last straw as far as I am concerned and my allegiance to the Tory party. I wrote saying as much to my Tory MP and havent received a reply !!

No it’s not a lot “each” (about £20). But it has to be said that £700m is a drop in the ocean compared to the total being spent on our behalf in that Godforsaken place.

However, in absolute terms just over twice the sum being lavished on schools and roads for the people of Afghanistan (those that have not departed that land for richer pastures such as the UK, that is) would pay the bill currently declared as “unaffordable” for care of the elderly in the UK.We are currently being told that a number of services for which people thought they were paying tax and National Insurance are no longer affordable. So when it comes to prioritisation, ask people whether they’d prefer their taxes spent on roads in Afghanistan or care of our elderly and the answer you get from most of them might help you understand what AOG is driving at.

I have to be honest and say that I begrudge it also. That huge amount anyway.
I'd rather it be spent on those injured & maimed in Afghanistan.

Nobody (not even me) would begrudge it if we were not being told that the welfare of people in the UK is at risk due to lack of funds. However, that is not the case. The majority of people here who pay taxes believe that the needs and requirements of people resident here should take precedence over those of foreigners. The UK government has no responsibility to build roads and schools in Afghanistan but it does have a responsibility to fund the welfare of old people here. Anybody wanting to is quite at liberty to do so by contributing funds from their own (taxed) income.
