Why does my cat do this?

I have 4 adult cats and whenever their in heat they pee on our furniture one of them did it today she peed on my bed and pooped down stairs on the carpet and did the same thing yesterday peed on my bed and pooped on the carpet,why do they do this?and what can i do to make them stop?

I wish the cats in my area would do the same instead of in my garden.

They are telling all the other cats in the area that they are ready for mating by distributing their irresistible aroma.

Why put up with the mess....just get them sorted! Better for them...they will be happier cats.

A female cat's natural instinct, when on heat, is to send out as many sexy messages, stating "Here I am guys, come and get me", as possible. She knows that her urine and faeces carry that message, so she'll be determined to distribute them well throughout her territory.

There are only two solutions:
1. Let her extend her territory to where the local toms will find her. (You'll then end up with a lot more cats!) ; or
2. Have her speyed.

As redhelen said, unless they're pedigrees & you're a breeder (although if you were, you probably wouldn't be asking this sort of question!!), get the cats spayed for heavens' sake!! There are enough unwanted kittens around as it is. If you can't afford to have them done then contact the PDSA or the Cats Protection League for help. If you can't afford to look after them properly, then what are you doing having pets anyway?
