If you're thinking about navel fluff then I believe that it's simply an accumulation of fibres and dust that builds up over time.
Why is it always Lilac / mauve?
Louis is incorrect. Just behind your navel is a small gland, the peridoinal gland, which produces the fluff, which is excreted by your navel. It is present and working in all adults over 14, and is blue in men and a slightly greyer tinge in women. The colour difference is due to hormonal differences in the action of the peridoinal gland.
