For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Directional response: "radiation or sensitivity pattern that is concentrated in certain directions." Think of the cone of a microphone moving. The pattern which it moves in is the directional response.
Proximity effect: "The influence of high frequency current flowing in one conductor upon the distribution of current flowing in an adjacent conductor."
XLR connector: "A microphone connector with a locking device to prevent unintentional disconnection."
Not sure what an XLA connector is. Perhaps a microphone connector without a locking device??
I took the definitions (in quotes) from the Illustrated Dictionary of Electronics by Turner & Gibilisco.
