Feeling sick after general anesthetic?
18 Answers
I had Endoscopic resection of concha bullosa of middle turbinates surgery Tuesday. Basically, something in my nose reduced to help me breathe better. I felt like death when waking up because it was my first time going under. I went home the same day and then felt fine, I was drinking and eating, I've been resting and taking my co-codamal. But today I feel really sick, like I'm going to throw up. Why? Should I be worried?

Everyone has different pain thresholds and I have found that Drs (particularly hospital doctors) have very different perceptions of pain, discomfort, need for analgesics, how much time needed off work etc *after* they have had a procedure rather than before.

lady alex......no I have never had this turbinectomy, but have done hundreds of them.
Had a hip replacement, developed a DVT and a pulmonary embolus....but my mates took care of me.
Had the other hip done 4 years later and bled into my leg.......no bog deal.
Apparently the nurses said that I was a "bl00dy awful patient".
What do they know?...;-)
As for analgesia I was a bit "stuffed" as I react badly to morphine.

Ive had many surgeries and can be very sick for days after, also i take co-codomol for my pain and a side effect of it is nausea and or vomiting, your body has been through a trauma and pumped full of drugs it doesnt usually have, my advice, rest and sleep as much as you can, you will recover, it just takes time, some people recover quickly other people dont...i would say its the co-codomol causing the nausea as you were fine after surgery and its now a couple of days later, if your symptoms persist, go to your GP...goodluck and hope you get better soon
ladyalex..LOL...he was a mate of mine, had no sense of humour at all, but a bl00dy good surgeon.
On the day of operation, he came to see me and as a joke I said "John, is there any chance of doing this as a day case?"
and with no smile he replied "This operation is not just a scratch on the skin you know".................his bedside manner was appalling, but unlike many ABers on here it was his surgical expertise that i was looking for, not a nice "understanding chap".

Re the bedside manner - I saw a gynae consultant privately at one time, he spent a lot of time operating in other parts of the world - and I had an op. I am terrified of anaesthesia and he asked me why - when I responded that I didn't want to die, he responded "well, I never thought of that" - to him, I was just another paying case.... Fortunately, his recovery nurse came to see me and told me that it was her job to try to make sure that I didn't. A later surgeon also (fairly) told me that he couldn't guarantee that I would come through, but he hadn't lost anyone yet and would do his damnedest to make sure that all was well - I appreciated that response much better than the first one!
