My daughter is 23 months (so possibly a little early for toilet training) I have tried a couple of times with no success so I just left it, and would leave it a month or so inbetween goes. Tried again this morning, and despite happily sitting on potty she wouldn't do anything, I just thought she didn;t need to go. One and half hours later she was doubling over, she said she didn't need to go but then started howling in pain, I have never seen her so upset and in apparent major discomfort. I quickly got her pants off and into a nappy which "swelled up" pretty quick. Can I safely assume that she was just holding onto a wee and this is what was causing her pain? she quietned down after about 10 mins after changing her into a nappy. My concern is I have NEVER seen her in so much pain!! she has fallen asleep now something she NEVER does anymore during the day. Anyone else experienced this?

oh Nelly, that does sound more as she is holding it in, though if it happens when she is wearing a nappy then see your GP.

give up the training for a few months. then perhaps try her popping her on the potty or get a family toilet seat (she may want to copy you) just a couple of times a day to see if she can get used to sitting on it.

Thanks Red! Well it was the only thing that was altered in her routine, and she seemed quite upset when she started to wee on the carpet bless her, (not that me or my husband ever make a fuss of that sort of thing . . . you should see our carpet ;-) But it worried me as she really was in agony! I know some children get tummy ache and constipation when they toilet train, but didn't think it was something that applied to bladder control (or that it caused that much pain) Think I will leave it for quite sometime and see how it goes.
she is still only little. No doubt youll have some parents telling you how their child is trained at that age, but it really is early and its not worth the anguish for her and you if you start pushing her.
At least you know that she has control and can hold it in, thats a good sign.
1st time I tried potty training my daughter, she held on for 8 hours!! by the time she eventually went, she was in tears, screaming that her bum hurt, when she finally had a wee she felt better within minutes. If your little girl has been holding it in and worrying its probaby made her tired.

The pain was probably a full bladder....but if it happens again while she's got a nappy on then like red says - get her checked over.

my girl was 3 years and 1 week by the time she actually got potty trained, but as she frequently tells me "it's not potty training"....she only ever used the potty twice in over a year, she chose a padded pink peppa pig toilet seat and was completely accident free within 3 days, a few weeks later she was also dry at night....when they're ready it's a really quick process - good luck!
I've never experienced it no but I echo what others have said about not continuing anymore. She is young and has plenty of time to do it later on. I would leave it for at least 2-3 months then when she shows an interest try again. She cannot like seeing the wee actually come out, it must frighten her so therefore she holds it which is a clear sign shes not ready.
