A brick feel into my husband's eye today (don't ask!) and he has been to the hospital. They dilated his pupil and picked all the bots of brick, etc out. However, he is not allowed pain killers as they want him to be able to feel if it becomes infected as the top layer of his cornea has come off. Obviously, he is in a lot of discomfort with his eye hurting and not being able to tolerate any sort of light. Has anyone got any any ideas on what he could do to ease the symptoms (his current plan is to drink some larger and go to bed early).
I genuinely feel sorry for the poor sod (being a man you can imagine how bad it must have been for him to actually go to the hospital - he doesn't even have a doctor).
I take it he has been given lubricants to relieve some of the discomfort and possible antibiotics to limit the risk of infection. I agree with sqad, not using painkillers is unusual and ibuprofen seems quite reasonable to me.
Retina injuries usually make the patient feel sleepy. If the retina is detached he should seek treatment at an eye hospital asap. Surely eye drops would help.
Aside from pain and trauma, the sheer frustration of this kind of eye injury upsets the sufferer - speaking from experience. There is very little you can do to pass the time happily - no tv, no reading, hard to see anything....
I'd have thought in the circs a little valium would take the edge off, also playing hs favourite music, favourite talk radio, just talking to him to jolly him along. You start to feel very isolated when your eyes are out of action.
