Me and my partner really want a baby but 5 yrs ago he had a vasectomy, he was then with his now ex wife, we have been together for 2 yrs and live together and are getting married too. But NHS will not fund us because he has got children but i havent, i really dont think this is fair, as i want to be a mother, is this punishment for being in love with someone that has had the snip,

what are peoples views on my suitation and does anybody know what i can do, i know there is sperm donor and adoption and places to go private but it costs a fortune...  does anybody know how maybe i can change the NHS  mind about funding us

I feel for you.  I wonder if you could investigate whether other health authorities fund the reversal? It may be a case of postcode lottery.

That's what I would have suggested Hgrove.

So don't give up yet & good luck munchkin. -x-

You're made aware before the snip that it should be considered as irreversible, that's the deal. As far as I'm aware the NHS won't even fund a vesactomy unless there is sound reason, never mind a reversal. I personally don't think that reversals should come out of the public purse, but that's not to say that I don't sympathise.

as I understand it, mechanical reversal is not the whole story, oftern the man's antibdies will perceive his growing sperm as outsiders, like bacteria as the body is not used to them being ther so will destroy them anyway.

Sorry but at the present, the NHS hasn't got enough money to treat everyone who is sick

sorry, meant "antibodies"
It isn't THAT expensive to go private, it depends how much you want kids. I thought this link may help.

In the hospital where I work the health authority stopped performing this operation(and the female version) about 4 years ago.  There usually has to be extreme circumstances(family tragedy/bereavement) for them to perform it via the NHS.

Unfortunately I also once heard a surgeon  say that roughly 18 months after a vasectomy any male would have significantly less than 50% chance of success from a reversal operation.

It would appear your only option would be to go private.  You'll find someone to do it but the odds of success are against you, but don't give up hope, it's worth a try.

If there's any way you can afford to have the reversal privately then I would encourage you to give it a go.  My husband and I were in exactly the same position except that his vasectomy was performed about 10 or 11 years before the reversal, and we were told that the longer ago it was done the less chance there was of success.  The odds were stacked against us but we went ahead anyway and it was the best decision we ever made.  Despite all the odds it was a success and we have a son.  If you can possibly find a way to fund the op, my advice would be go for it.
