Over the last year, every now and then I get a sharp shooting pain up the right side of my neck. It is so severe that I can literally shout out and have been known to drop something ive been holding at the time. It lasts just a few seconds but immediately afterwards there is a deep burning sensation in the exact place where the pain has travelled. The whole thing is so intense at the time it almost feels as though I have been shot. I have been to the doctor but he just said it sounded like a trapped nerve and didnt suggest anything.

Two things come to mind (I have no idea of your age or occupation)

Cervical spondylosis or hypothyroidism.(under acr#tive thyroid)

Ask you doctor if you can have a blood test to check your thyroid hormones.

Actually, I already have an underactive thyroid, have been taking medication for 6 years for it but dont see the connection.
Well. the connection may well be, that you thyroxine dose is too small.....when was your last thyroid tests done?
Have changed username so its still same Q answerer. erm i havent been tested for I dont know how long. And havent been asked to either
Well you better get them checked as this may well be the cause of your problems.

How much thyroxine are you taking?
100mg per day. so why would that cause this pain??
Your thyroid should be tested yearly. Your doc should be calling you in for tests.
100mcms is a very small dose and you need to get your bloods checked.

Muscle pain and cramps is often the presenting feature of an underactive thyroid or inadequate dose of thyroxine.
Ohh well dont think I've had a blood test for at least 3 years. Mind you, our surgery is always full of locums. They just repeat my prescription.
