Way too sleepy

My friend (male) seems to have no energy since going back to university after the summer. He only has one early start per week and tends to lie in until midday most other days. If he has to get up at, say, 9am, he finds it very hard and is sleepy by 7pm. He hates the cold weather and every year seems to want to hibernate. I know that as animals, we have these tendencies (to sleep more and hide once the weather is cold) but I wonder if it is anything to do with his lifestyle? He does smoke dope every day (only a very small amount) and is small built and underweight.
Any thoughts gratefully received.

I am quite sure his habit isn't helping - but it sounds too as if his daily life is not stimulating enough. He needs to get up and get out, and find something in life to interest him. I know how easy it is to sleep your life away, if you don't see the point in getting up. Is he eating properly?
Smoking dope in the evenings every night would personaly leave me very heavy headed in the morning. What time is he going to bed? Sleeping until midday is likely to increase his fatigue, it's bad to sleep for too many hours as well as too little. Does he exercise? This will also help.
Burning the candle at both ends?......dope,drinking, partying.late nights.

Hibernate?....nonsense.

If he would substitute a nice cup of tea for those aromatic smokes he'd find himself feeling much more alert.

Sorry, more info here: He is 32, not 18. A mature student. He doesn't party. He doesn't drink. He goes to bed around midnight but tends to stay away til 1 or 2 as he finds he works better then. But yes, he gets very little exercise really, and I personally think he doesn't eat enough.
If he's not getting to sleep until 2am then it's no wonder he's tired if he has to be somewhere at 9am. He needs to sort his sleeping patterns out, and probably exercise will help this.
He's wasting his study years (and the fees being paid for him to be at Uni), if he's not able to concentrate - a mature student ought to be able to organise his time better than a teenager. He needs to get his daily timetable in order - what will he do if he fails his course, because he can't get his act together?

Hang on, sorry, I'm not being clear. It's not that he hasn't got his act together! He is very studious, he gets Firsts for every assignment and works hard. My worry is that he seems to be needing more sleep that most people, and if he gets up earlier than midday, he is in a daze. He can just keep sleeping, whereas most people find they have to get up once they've woken up. I wonder if there might be a medical issue linked with him being underweight?
My post wasn't implying he needed to get his act together, it would be what I would suggest for anyone with sleeping difficulties.

Also, if at 32 this is the way that works for him then I can't see any reason to worry on his behalf. My other half is the same, he stays up far later than I can but he can still get up in the moring, it's just the way he is. Also being underweight could just be poor eating habits or lack of appetite, if he's not worried then I wouldn't be either.
