i broke my left scaphoid on monday morning and was given a temporary cast for two weeks. as it was getting flappy and loose, i have re-dressed it so that it stays in place and actually immobilises my thumb (which i assume is the whole point). my question is...will the swelling mostly have gone down and will i be damaging my hand by strapping it properly?

yours gratefully, elsie x

My dearest Elsie,
For reasons that i won't go into, the scaphoid is perhaps the worst bone in the wrist to fracture in terms of healing. Your self treatment is fine for today, but i would certainly go back to A&E tomorrow to have another cast put on.

The swelling should have settled by now.

thanks, squad. it's only a backslab cast (i think that's what they're called as it's plastered on the top but only bandaged underneath). as i have re-bandaged and the cast is in the right place and immobilising my hand...do i really have to suffer another 4 hour wait at a+e? it feels ok as it is - not too tight, but placed firmly around my hand. i'm due back to the fracture clinic on the 31st to see if i need it pinned as it is a very bad break. shall i just wait until then? x
