anti-depressants

Does any one know if they a)make you put on weight and b)make you more aggresive? I've always had problems putting on weight but have put on a stone in a year since taking ADs. Also i get annoyed really quickly.

Hi Indian, what ever you do dont stop taking your AD,s without consulting your doctor first. You didn,t say how long you have been taking them for. I,m on AD.s too called Citalopram, the leaflet which came with the pack said 1 of the side effect is possible weight gain. I have never had a problem with my weight but I have put on half a stone since taking them ( which is 10 mths ) but I'm on H R T too and I've read that going through the change can give you weight gain too. The tablets I'm taking for depression have helped me alot, before I just felt like I was in a black hole, and I can only discribe feeling like I was having a mega P.M.T. day after day.
I wish you well, and dont be too worried about your weight gain, its you and your health which is more important. Good Luck & God Bless :-)

indian, If you're on one the SSRI's. then you will gain weight as they give out cravings for carbohydrates! They can certainly cause aggression as well as a zombie like state. When i first started taking ADs in put me in the frame of mind that, now i was getting my head sorted out, i could get the rest of me sorted out as well. running's a good way of relaxing (?) for me and beating out any left over stress or anger the pills couldnt. my friend however did put on weight because he was more comfortable about whatever he looked which was his main problem.
Hi indian -I only took my recently prescribed anti-depressants for 3 weeks, so not long enough to find out whether I would gain weight. The other times I took them was in 1994 & 1996, but I didn't put on any weight.
I've gone back to taking St.John's Wort (one a day) again, in the hope that they keep me on an even keel.
Chin up & good luck with sorting out your problems -x-
