Nail Varnish - Top Coat and Base Coat

Should these be bought separately, or is a 'combined' bottle as good ? I am thinking of buying the Sally Hansen but don't know which is best. thanks all !

I've always understood that there are different constituents in base coat and top coat.

Base coat is designed not only to provide a good 'key' to the polish coats but to smooth out small surface flaws top coat is to seal and provide both protection and extra gloss anything that claims to be able to do both is probably more like a clear polish in a fancy packaging
