Adam and Eve

If the Bible is to be believed(As Millions do), Adam and Eve were created by god, Who we are all decended from, So where do they fit in, in evolutionary terms? Were they apes, cos surely that's where we are decended from?

Its a story.

We KNOW that we decended from Neanderthal man... who was very apelike.

I dont think that the bible story of the garden of eden represented Adam and Eve as 'apelike'.. indeed.. he (God) says that he created man in his own image.

Science was not really around when the Bible was written, and the story made for a good explanation with regard to how our species came about.

Creation Theory is incompatible with Evolutionary Theory, and since they are both theories it follows that we do not know which, if either, is true. It's a case of picking the one you believe in.

Kempie's quite correct, they're both theories and neither can be proved. Although admittedly one theory is based on a methodology steeped in logic, deduction and observation and the other is based on the colour of the sky on the first Wednesday in June after a frog breaks wind in the company of a gazelle plus a mistranslation lyric sheet from the German edition of a Marillion album...

you can still be a christian and not take the bible 100% literally, especially the old testament.  There are plenty of scientists who accept evolution as the starting blocks of life and see the creation story as just that - a story to explain something that only relatively recently have we been able to explain any other way.

We aren't descended from Neanderthals, they were an evolutionary dead end who probably descended from the same apes as we did but died out - perhaps because our ancestors were better or smarter. The Bible story is certainly believed by many, especially in the USA where there is a backlash against teaching evolution at all. The two theories can't be reconciled except by saying that the Bible is myth rather than fact, a symbolic telling of the beginning of life.

I was explained this as a child as Adam and Eve were symbolic of the human race in general

The two can actually fit together quite well and could both be true. It is said that god created the world in 7 days and on the 6th day he created man (or whatever day it was). The word "day" when first written in ancient Hebrew times meant period of time and had no real definition of a beginning or an end. therefore, the "day" in which god created man could be the period of time in which it took man to evolve.

in other words, 'day' is only a symbolic day. It always seems to me a bit pointless to believe in the Bible but then claim that of course it doesn't really mean what it says, that it was mistranslated, that's it's only symbolic or whatever. That kind of reasoning leaves people free to pick and choose what bits they believe, which is a good method of living life but a rather flaky basis for a religion.

in the bible it says that the first day GOD made night and day. the 2nd day he divided the waters."sky" on the third day he rolled back the water to provide land. he made trees , mountains, hills, ...... the 4th day he made the sun and moon, and stars,on the 5th day he made fish in the ocean and birds in the sky. on the 6th day he made the animals on land, and from dust god made the most wonderfull creature of all-----a person! god named him adam. on the 7th day god reasted.eve was created from a rib in adam. that is why we are all brothers and sisters in the lords eyes! we all came from adam and eve who came from GOD! it all comes down to faith.

So, If We're not to take this literally, How many other stories in the Bible have not to take literally, I mean even most of the stories about Christ were apparently written down 20+ years after the event, and you know how people can exagerate about events that happened yesterday.

Surely we are all decendants of Mr & Mrs Noah (of ark fame), who in turn were decendants of Adam & Eve.

Just out of curiosity, did they (A & E) have surnames and what language did they speak?

If Adam and Eve had a surname, who would have used it? Come to that, when the Mark of Cain was placed on Cain for his brother's murder, who exactly was this supposed to warn?
