Carrying on (I suppose) from spotsandstripes post below, has anyone here any experience of hypnosis? Did it work? did it work longterm? Is hypnosis just a bit of suggestion similar to the placebo effect?
I have recently been reading a few books on self hypnosis and listening to a few hypnotic cd's but cant say that Im impressed.
Would like to hear views pro & anti.
thanks folks.

I know of people undergoing hypnotism to quit smoking - and they still do not smoke - Success!
My daughter once spent money on hypnosis to lose weight, it didn't work at all. For some reason some people are not able to be hypnotised.
Question Author
askyourgran, maybe that suggests that some people are just not suggestible. Which in turn means that hypnotisable people are gullible??
But I dont think thats so
Ive looked into it...its a hit and a miss....but id give it a go personally i think x
When I used to smoke I went for hypnosis. It didn`t work. You`re either a good subject for hypnosis or your not and I`m not. The guy was good too and came with a recommendation. It just didn`t work for me. I couldn`t shut my mind off and concentrate on what he was saying.
I know several people who've tried hypnotism to stop smoking and with one it worked, the others still smoke like chimneys.
I remember my sil being hypnotised to stop smoking, they hypnotist told her that if she felt she was likely to smoke again to go back for a refresher session. She went back twice more, but it failed. She still smokes.

askyourgran, I had a similar experience with acupunture. It was advertised as a 'once only' cure. After one session (which should have been succesful) I was told that I would require more sessions plus buying some herbal remidies.
Rip of merchants. Wonder what trading standerds would have said had I followed it through.
I think the get out clause is 'It doesn't work for everyone.'
I have acupuncture treatment for arthritis pain and find it excellent. It is not a miracle cure and my acupuncturist does not claim it is. Her first words to me were "I cannot cure what is wrong, but I can alleviate the pain" and that is exactly what she has done. I have regular treatment once every two weeks. I never advise anyone to have it because I don't think it works for everyone but it certainly works for me.

Think youre right gran. Isnt there some sort of regulation for these snake oil salesmen i the uk??
Nope nailit, they just shot 'em up in Dodge City.
Question Author
starbuck, I am actually in two minds about acupuncture (I have an uncle who had exactly the same complaint and who had the same results) but to advertise, openly in shop windows, to be able to 'cure' something??? Surely thats false advertising?
I used to go to a Chiropractor for arthritis pain, but my OH went once and wouldn't go again. It helped me and I'm thinking of going back again.
Question Author
horses for courses I guess.
I agree nailit, the advertising is certainly wrong. You must have hit upon a charlatan (hope that's the right way to spell it). I would not trust him or her. The one I go to is very modest in her claims as I said. Incidentally, she is Chinese.
Why were you not impressed ? If you allow it to help it will, if you reject it then it can't work miracles. It's just a way to get your conscious desire accepted by your subconscious. I'm unsure anyone knows all the details of what is occurring but it's still the case you have to want and work towards the personal change you say you wish. It isn't a way to change without anu conscious effort on your part; it's just a help.

>>Why were you not impressed ?<<
Err! 'cause it didnt work maybe.
Didnt allow or reject, merely experienced. Much like I would await the outcome of an operation.
Then there was your problem. You expected it to do the change for you with no effort from yourself it seems.
