I use blue reliever inhalers for asthma, but the instructions say 8 puffs per day, I asked my doctor if I could more when necessary and he shrugged his shoulders!

Hi Am I right in thinking you asked him if u could increase? his shrugged shoulder were wrong granted, with the blue inhalers is it Bricanyl ur on u can increase the amount of use however I suggest u go to a diff doc in practice if theres more than one, if ur needing so many puffs a day thrn I agree with ther answer that u need a preventer whichd ud take at specified times and the blue one as prescribed and at times u need it. If ur already on a preventer then this prob need to be changed to a diff one. Do u give the puffs both quickly after the other cos if u do that, if u shake it then puff straight after the first all ur actually inhaling is the contents of the inhaler whichmixes the inside, u need to wait at least 30secs. Are u a longtime suffere only asking cos any inhaler etc wont work properly if u havent got the administering procedure correct,. hope this helps x

Whether you can or not is really not the modst important issue... the relevant thing is you shouldn't need to if you do except in very rare circumstances you need a review
If what you have is a salamol Easibreathe type the limit is up to 8 puffs per day (Checked in BNF) the recommendation is the same for the standard ventolin but I haven't always seen that adhered to

I was told that in a severe asthma attack you can use up to 10 puffs one after the other. Ordinarily you should not exceed 8 puffs per day. I think you need to go back to using your preventer inhaler morning and night. Ask your GP for Seretide as this is a preventer and also contains a long acting reliever.
