Shirt off means yellow
32 Answers
All right I give up. What was the logic behind the rule that a player who removes his shirt when celebrating a goal must be yellow-carded ? How subtle is it? If he's got an identical shirt underneath, or anything else that spares the maidenly blushes of the crowd by concealing all of the skin underneath, is he still yellow-carded [the answer appears to be 'yes'] ? It's no more incitement to the crowd than other, unpunished, celebrations
Of course, since this is the rule, and well-known, any player who does that gets no prizes for clever thinking. He should confine himself to more logical acts; rocking an imaginary baby, making pelvic thrusts at the corner flag, shooting an imaginary gun etc.

Diego forlan without his shirt had a lot to recommend it as most footie players have decent bods I think the preactice should be actively encouraged

My take on it has always been that if they run to the opposition fans then they should be red carded, not yellow, as it is inflammatory, but if they run to their own fans I don't see the harm, even if I am a curmudgeonly old git who would prefer a return to one arm in the air to replace the daft rocking baby or stupid choreogrpahed dance routines.
Yes , dancer, agreed. But Lionel Messi is charmingly old school, but almost alone, and he is better than any. He always has a look of 'Well, that's what I do. There's no need to go wild about it!'. And Balotelli, whatever immaturity he shows otherwise, is another who seems reluctant to make a fuss. He did get some understandable criticism for wearing 'why is it always me?' on his undershirt though. [Answers please, on a postcard, to M Balotelli...]
There was a great furore in officialdom when an American woman international took her shirt off on scoring. The spoilsports! That was because she was wearing a sports bra which she was paid to advertise. Could that be the secret origin of the rule? It had to be applied to both sexes because of equality legislation so it was.

You may rememeber a few years ago, Diego Forlan scored a goal and took his shirt off. Because it had been raining and the shirt was a tight fit, it took him ages to get it back on. It was like watching someone trying to put a wetsuit on! I'm sure FIFA brought something in then to ensure it shouldn't happen again.

Why don't we just ban goals altogether?
What a miserable bunch of sods inhabit Answerbank..Football is all about scoring goals and celebrating..I celebrated all 5 of ours against Dinglehampton Blunderers with equal gusto and our 92nd minute winner against Stoke (who we hadn't beat for 30 years) was an ecstatic experience.
True football fans know what I mean..it's a passionate game,I like to see the pampered pooches that play these days showing a bit of joy and exhuberence in netting one.
You lot should stick to crown green bowls or something :-P
Boing Boing!

Mighty WBA - in reference to the above, I have often gone absolutely Radio Rental when my team scored a goal, as I think everyone should beacuse, after all, it is a passionate game, as you quite rightly say. I think the players scoring in any era enjoyed it just as much; it is the difference in the way they show it that I refer to. A choreographed w@nky dance tells me more about the player's egocentric outlook than it does about his passion for actually scoring a goal. My favourite memories of players scoring involve spontaneous passionate unplanned moments, not six or seven players pretending they are at a disco. where is the passion in that?
