The question is for an eighteen year old man who has not changed his diet or lifestyle , yet the amount of flatulence and abdominal discomfort has increased greatly. He has good health apart from this , his appetite is good, his bowel movements are unaltered, just this increase in wind. He takes no medication, leads an active kind of life, the wind is bothering him. Any ideas ?

If he is eating on the run or has any excess stress in his life he may well be swallowing air with his food. The answer is to eat more slowly and chew thoroughly
If he isn`t stressed and scoffing his food (and ingesting air) then it`s probably diet related. Too many complex carbohydrates such as hummus can cause wind. Going out with his mates and having a few beers could have the same result as well.

Increased since when? So how long has he been suffering from flatulence and abdominal discomfort?

What about this "abdominal discomfort"...where is it, what brings it on, what relieves it?

Thanks guys , I will get him to read these pages when he ejects himself from his pit.
Sqad, he says this has been like this for a month now, and he gets low abdominal grumble .
He doesn't drink, or to pub, he doesn't know what brings it on....I think that is what he is asking, after a good ...release of wind, the grumble diminishes.
flump...that is helpful.

Aged 18years unlikely to be of sinister origin, but don't let this state of affairs to continue for more than another 2 weeks. If it does, then a medical hand needs running over his abdomen.
Does he eat nuts and/or seeds? These give me terrible wind.
