My 81 year old mum told me yesterday she has a prolapsed womb and has had it for a long time but didnt do anything about it, any way she has now. She has to go to hospital on the 1st of May for a consultation. What is the most likely course of treatment ? Thanks.

Hysterectomy would be the most likely treatment for a woman of her age.
Her child bearing days are long gone so probably an hysterectomy. They can do that by keyhole surgery now (I think).

Thanks Daffy for your reply much appreciated.

thanks ummmm.
I had a prolapsed womb for some time which was "cured" by a ring which had to be fitted and changed every few months. It eventually got worse (of course) and I had to go into hospital. You have to stay in for a few days after the operation. I think they will either remove the womb or do a repair. I had a repair and they were absolutely brilliant. They decide what they are going to do when you are being operated on. Tell your mother not to worry - the surgeons are superb. There is no scar as they operate through the vagina or may even do keyhole surgery nowadays, I don't know much about that part as I was unconscious, but the rest was easy for me.

Starbuckone, she told us last night she reckons she has had it for about 10 years but didnt let on. Your answer is really useful, thank you.
ditto a 'ring' in the first instance! instant and effective for most (depending on severity etc) x
Good gracious jasmin, how could she let it go that long? I panicked straight away as soon as it happened. I thought I had the big C all of a sudden. Well, you know - that is always on the cards. Fortunately I had a good doctor and she advised what to do.
If it is not causing any problems.......no treatment.

If it is.....then a ring as suggested by others.

Last resort.... vaginal hysterectomy.

Starbuckone, thats exactly what we said to her ! She said the last year or so it started giving her problems. Any way thanks for everyones help and advice I will let you know how she gets on at the hospital. Thanks Sqad hope you are well .
jasmin....fine thanks.
So many older women - my mother included - literally walked round for years with their wombs hanging out rather than mention having problems 'down there' - remarkable as they often had borne many children so ought to have gained some confidence in taking their ladyparts to the doctors.
Like others have said, if she can be helped through the emotional upset of being examined the cure will be as nothing in comparison. best of luck!

We are going to need all the luck we can get ! She is already angry at us for making her go and see about it !
jasmin26 >>>She is already angry at us for making her go and see about it !<<< Im not sure you need to be telling her that you have been discussing it on the World Wide Web then :)

Good luck and hope all goes well whatever the decision.
well done for showing concern, and this site is anonymous afterall ratter!
Question Author
maybe not Ratter! i will be well and truly in the bad books !
Ratter - jasmin can take heart from the likelihood that none of her mother's friendship circle are online.
Insist upon a CT scan!

My Nan had this for a couple of years and we've just found out she has a melon-sized tumour lying between her uterus and bowels. We are getting the biopsy results tomorrow to determine whether the tumour stems from.the uterus or bowels but we strongly suspect it's the former.
a hysterectomy seems a bit drastic for a prolapsed womb.poor thing must have been very uncomfortable, although no expert id have thought a " ring " may be suggested.
What exactly are the symptoms? Tissue protruding from the vagina or just narrowing and tightness?
