Threads as spoilers...

Now the fuss has died down, I wonder if the Ed could arrange a 'Heading' both within the 'Sport' Topic & its subsidiary Topics, especially 'Football'.

It might say something along the lines of -

Welcome to the AnswerBank Football Section - when starting a thread, please refrain from using titles that will show in Latest Posts as 'spoilers'.

A recent example was (with apologies to mickrog!) -

I'm sure that I wasn't alone in looking forward to the highlights on MotD & was a bit miffed to see this thread pop up & pretty much give the result away.

A non-specific title - eg, "Premier League Result", "Champions League Final" - would enable the user to fill the question box with the meat of the thread & warn others not to open it & spoil their enjoyment later on.

This is of course an excellent idea, but dissenting opinions are welcome...

Good suggestion your Maj... but it needs also to include a bit about not putting key info in the first few lines of the post ast that is also seen when scrolling through the posts in a section.

The problem is, at what point does a spoiler become a non-spoiler? Some people record programmes to watch many days, or even weeks, later. Just as in the classic episode of "The Likely Lads", if you don't want to know the result, turn off your TV and, now of course, your computer.

Mike I think in the case of football, those without Sky etc. wait for that evenings highlights, as regards general TV shows then it becomes harder to impose any theoretical time scale for spoilers.

Mick I think all that is being asked is a little courtesy for others, no one is saying don't talk about the match/es but word your title accordingly.

mike & Mick - I'd avoided the news on the radio all afternoon, had no intention of visiting sites that might give the results & would not have watched the news on TV until I'd seen MotD.

Users can post what they like - I'm just asking for the courtesy of not spoiling others' enjoyment.

I agree, on other sites I have seen people put "SPOILER then the name of the tv program or sports event as the title" you can the read or avoid.

So much more difficult these days to avoid "spoilers" with wall-to-wall TV and radio news, as well as Internet. I find it's best just to go with the flow, and still enjoy the buildup, which in the case of last week's results, was gripping even knowing the outcome.
I have a friend who occasionally pulls out the video of Arsenal beating Man U in the FA Cup Final, in the hope that one day Brady's cross won't reach Alan Sunderland.

Sorry but I can not agree. I watch MOTD and steer clear of the results but if I log on here, then I know I risk getting to know some of the results.

The whole point is though, that if the titles were better worded then you could happily use the rest of the site that day. This is just a request for something like that not a veto on discussions.

why not Mick? you don't have to make "spoiler" the whole of the thread title, just add it to the title and make sure that the rest of the title doesn't give the game away. It works well elsewhere. I have seen it used for discussing books as well.

There is a difference between a thread entitled " City and United - Wow!
To a thread entitled " 2-0 the blues, get in!!2
