The most normal setup with technology when I was setting these things up (several years ago) was to be able to do everthing I could do at the office from home. Absolutely no difference in terms of IT - the only difference being that you were in your own home.
Done with a broadband connection, and use of the 'phone system at work. You could do everything at home on a PC or laptop and your home 'phone or a seperate line could be setup to be just as it was your extension in the office.
I am not just talking about reading/sending Emails etc. I could connect to the company LAN (Local Area Network), pick up documents from the servers, manage the UK network with various tools I used in the Office I.e. total functionality.
