Curious about low amniotic fluid with friend

My friend is 6 months pregnant and recent scan said her amniotic fluid was quite low - it apparently be between 8-18 something or other, dont know the term of measurement. Her's was 8.6. She went back last week and it was 5.8 and they gave her steroid injection and sent her home. She cant seem to get clear answer from them as to why it is so low and Googling things is just confusing her. Anybody have info on this?

loads of reasons - could be there is a malfunction in the bab'ys kidneys, problems with the placenta, small for dates baby, amniotic leak (waters gone).
They will have given her the steroids in case she goes into labour, to develop the baby's lungs

this is quite easy to understand at least as a basis... lots of things can cause it including as it says the mother to be becoming dehydrated she probably ought to take someone in to see the midwife next time as she may be getting too anxious and not taking in the explanations she is given.

No need to panic.......5.8 at 24 weeks is within normal limits.

Situation needs monitoring.

Cannot think of a better explanation for the steroid injection than bednobs has suggested.
