malarone and diamoxin in early pregnancy
7 Answers
My niece recently returned from Tanzania, and has been on a 23 day course of Malarone plus also took two diamoxin whilst at high altitude. During this time she became pregnant. Does any one have any knowledge to any problems with regards to taking these medications in early pregnancy. We have already searched the internet which has not been very helpful, due to very little research on humans , but not very good results with rats.
She is still waiting to be allocated a midwife, who she will obviously ask the same question. Meanwhile she is getting anxious, so any information would be very useful. Many thanks in advance .

I`m not an expert but there must be quite a few people around the world who have become pregnant while on anti-malarials (all those honeymoons in exotic places). I wouldn`t be too worried if it was me. Did your niece climb Kili? I remember people taking Diamox as a preventative for altitude sickness for the whole time they were there. I always thought that was a bit strange as it`s a diuretic and that`s the last thing you need at altitude. As she only took two, I wouldn`t be too worried if that was me either (but I`m not an expert - Sqad is).
