Spend all day sitting down. Repeat that for 5 days a week - To make matters worse I recently moved into a bungalow, and work on the ground floor of the building, so it's been about 6 months since I used a flight of stairs!
I walk quite a lot each day. I take my dog out for a 15 mins walk in the mornings before work, 10 min walk to the station, 20 mins walk to work....then repeat all that after work. Then I take my dog out for a big walk for 30-40 mins when i get home. After all that I try and go on my rowing machine for 10-15 mins. I'm knackered for the end of the day.
I recently bought a pedometer (good fun). They say (not sure who THEY are) that you should do 10,000 steps a day. I thought that would be easy. I walk to work (10 mins), walk to lunch and back (15 mins), walk back home (10 mins). In between I walk to get the shopping most days or to the market and I live in a maisonette with 2 flights of stairs and have 3 flights of stairs at work. On average, this comes to a grand total of 5,000 steps! So to do the daily requirement of 10,000 steps I'd have to do everything twice or find much longer route to work. Surprising!
You are so right barender. When I got my pedometer I thought "10000 steps a day - easy peasy". Boy was I wrong! My bst so far has been 6000 steps and I was really pushing myself that day. One of my work colleagues has one as well and it's turned into a bit of a competition. She did 19000 steps one day, it bearly killed her!
I don't drive but have a young toddler son. We go out (sometimes with his pram/buggy, sometimes with him walking) usually twice a day - a walk to the store on the other side of the village, and a walk to the park, or the scenic route around the village. I walk to Mothers and Toddlers too. If we go to the local town, I do take the bus, as it's really too far. I reckon I must do easily 10,000 steps a day, and I'm going to borrow or buya pedometer to check this out. I feel so much better for gettign out and about, and my son just loves it - so much to see and do, and you can't stop to smell the flowers, or watch horses etc if you're whizzing by in a car or bus.
Went to Newmarket Races on Friday - you know, backwards and forwards between bar and placing bets and racetrack to see them go past the post. One of those corporate days out with 'We Will Rock You' Queen tribute band playing the night out after the last race. At end of day pedometer read 12,500 steps! Shame you can't do THAT every day!
