Hubby has managed to cut his thumb opening some food for the dog. Admittedly, blood has been pouring for the past 8 minutes or so, and I have given little sympathy. After placing his thumb under water for a good five minutes or so, i have got through many plasters and have taken to an antiseptic bandage to pop round it, secured by some tape. It will not stop bleeding, and he is convinced it needs a stitch or two. I think different. Do I cart him off to A & E, or continue my sympathy by drinking wine and playing on the computer?

Try holding his hand above his head. It will stop the bleeding. Clean it up again and have a good look before changing the bandage. If it doesn't knit pretty quickly, take him to A&E - remembering to keep his hand above his head for most of the time. Nowadays A&E will usually just glue or tape this sort of injury. If he hasn't had a Tetanus jab recently they should...

Is he normally a bleeder
It's Friday evening, if you're going to the hospital go sooner rather than later. Friday night at the A&E is not the place to me.
Oh and I'd ring the NH Helpline and see what they advise.
Late night chemist for butterfly stitches/strips?

I would go for them, wine and the pc - having fed poor fido first ;)
Apply pressure and elevate the wound.
yes....if it won't stop bleeding it's likely he'll need stitches......do get him there before he bleeds to death! x
A&E, sounds like he does need a suture or two.
Running it under water wont have helped. Apply pressure to it and see if it stops. Is it on the fatty bit of the thumb (bit with the finger print)?

I would go if it were me actually... If it should have a stitch, it will leave a horrible scar if it doesn't get one.
Keep the hand elevated above the heart which should help as it is difficult for blood to pump uphill. Depends on where the cut is on the thumb. Possibly will need a stitch or two. If hospital close by, would perhaps be as well to go now rather than later due to weekend idiots.

I would be inclined to have a good look at it and if it`s a neat cut (but a little deep) go to a late chemist and try some wound closure strips, then a dry dressing.

Cheers for the advice . I've tried to ignore him and let him bleed in peace, I thought he was being a drama queen. Weekend A&E is a friggin nightmare, so it's off I go, with a few magazines, a good book, a few packets of crisps and my bleeding OH
Good luck to OH

FEED THE FIDO before you leave ...
