hi there I cant decide whether to take the sedation or not for a colonoscopy so many stories good and bad I have heard. I am quite an anxious person so I dont know whether or not I should take the sedation I am not only now worried about the procedure I am worried about the sedation as well I am not good on pain either. But I need to have this done just in case I have polyps and their removal can prevent cancer or I have something bad and they can catch it in time. Any thoughts anyone?

When I had my sigmoidoscopy which was painful but only for a short time, they had to abandon the woman in the next bed's colonoscopy as she could not stand the pain. Might be better to have sedation than have to go back for a second go.
If someone was going to stick a pipe up my backside, I would want a sedation...........I know some people wouldn't mind....but I would.
go for the sedation, it's simpler in the long term. I did as i couldn't countenance the pain.
I had a low-dose sedation because they were worried because I was getting a bus home and had nobody to accompany me - it all went off smoothly and I felt NO PAIN whatsoever, just a little minor discomfort.
I can't speak for myself as I have never had it done, but a friend of mine has, without the sedation. She said she would never, under any circumstances, have it done without sedation again.
I would have the sedation, no question.

You are anxious enough without having to deal with the pain of the procedure.
agree ^^
My Dad recently had a colonoscopy under sedation. He was groggy but absolutely fine and he was glad of it! I had to drive him home and he slept for a bit of the day afterwards.
I was unsure when I had a colonoscopy like you because you hear so many conflicting stories. I told the staff I was unsure and what they did was put a needle in my hand before the procedure and told me that if it became too uncomfortable they could sedate me and then carry on. As it turned out I didn't need any sedation it wasn't bad at all but the opportunity was there if I did. Not sure if all hospitals offer this but it's worth asking. Good Luck You''ll be fine
I found the sedation wonderful - totally relaxed when I came round and disturbingly I still hanker after that feeling like a junkie.
Also, the sedation makes you indifferent to the farting that follows. Yours and others.
I had a colposcopy, they started off with no sedation but I gagged and gagged, I panicked because I was gagging so much. They decided to sedate me quickly, I didn't feel a THING after the sedation! I too am an anxious person so if I HAD to have a colonoscopy I'd definately, without a doubt, have sedation!!!! I think the prep would be the worse thing O_o
Oops, not colposcopy (but I've had that too!!) I mean Endoscopy lol !!! Sorry!
Hi, I had a sigmosidoscopy and had no pain at all; as they found some polyps and removed them it was decided that I go for a colonoscopy. Because the first procedure didn't hurt, I assumed that the colonoscopy wouldn't either. I was wrong! Someone suggested to me it depends on the person actually carying out the procedure, but I don't know if that's the case. All I do know is that when I go back for the next one in about 3 more years time, I'm having the sedation FOR SURE. All the best. PS They give you sandwiches and tea and coffee afterwards in our hospital! (and yes it's true about all the farting):-)
YES have the sedation! I've had lots of colonoscopies and sedation makes it just easy and nice. If you're lucky you may sleep through the whole thing. If not, you at least won't care what they're doing. I had no sedation once and whilst not painful exactly, it was nowhere near as nice as having sedation.
I have had lots of colonoscopies over the last 25 years every 2 years to be precise and only once did I have It done without sedation Oh my do not do It.Have the sedation you will feel so relaxed and unaware of whats going on,you will have a little sleep afterwards a cup of tea and a sandwich, but you must have someone to take you home and be with you for at least 24 hrs.
