See our caring goverment and the labour mob want some thing done about people being obese .Yeah sure nothing else to do. They will come out as usual with a report which cost millions and then find the cost of putting it into action and keeping it going it to expensive so it will be dropped .Why should an overweight ,overpaid useless politition tell us what to do .Get your fat noses out of our own business .

The MPs could lead by example and start with Eric Pickles and that Soames balloon. They are both really obese. As you say, it's just another government waste of money.
here here folks its the "what daft idea can we dream up next" club.
Tell me one country that has successfully tackled this problem ? America certainly has not !

The good people do not need labelled by this mob .They are people with feelings and should not be treated this way . Will be interesting to see what happens .Bet its derailed by another equally stupid idea by March .
i doubt it will see the light of day, nor will it be march, next week will do..
The level of obesity in this country is a very real problem which costs the NHS 100s of millions a year, so I think the Government should try to tackle it - and if that means upsetting the feelings of fat people, by calling them fat, then so be it.

It never ceases to amaze me that the reaction to smoking induced illnesses is always along the lines of 'they've nobody to blame but themselves', whereas people who can't control what they put in their mouths are considered 'victims'.

Fat people who suffer from obesity related illnesses have nobody to blame but themselves - they are not victims. I appreciate some fat people are fat because of an underlying medical problem, and they deserve our sympathy, but the vast majority of fat people are fat simply because they eat too much and exercise too little.

By and large I agree with weecalf - it would be great if the Govt could solve the problem, but they can't. The reason they can't is because fat people will still be unable to control what they eat regardless of what the Govt says/does. The only people that can lose weight are those that want to lose weight, and quite simply there are many fat people who can't be arsed, probably as a result of laziness, even though they probably cry themselves to sleep everynight.
many fat people i have known put themselves on endless diets, some of the diets worked for a time, but soon the pounds went back on. There was a very interesting series of programmes on last year about why people are getting bigger, and not just in USA, UK. They concluded it's not just that people are stuffing their faces with burger, fries and coca cola, but the additives in these items and a whole host of other more so called beneficial food stuff that are doing the damage. Not only the fat content of foodstuffs but the levels of sugars and additional highly addictive additives. My weight has yoyo'd over the years, my fault mostly i expect, i try and not eat the wrong things, but with so much information floating around, many people are hopelessly confused as to what is really fattening and what is not. Have a look at food labels, check calories, and see what i mean. All the diet books in the world won't make you thin, just out of pocket. I had the help of a dietician to start off, but some of her ideas were quite frankly dangerous. You can starve yourself to be thin, and become very ill. we need a much better understanding of what it is we are eating, all of it, not just the so called fatty foods. If you eat a lot of processed packaged foods, without knowing exactly it is you are eating, then sure as eggs are eggs the pounds will go on. Better education all round is needed, not castigation of those struggling with their weight.

Heartfelt thoughts there from em10 .I know people who have and are trying to loose weight and are very down about the fact it does not work . When their plight is being used by the books writers ,diets and so called experts I do feel for the good people . I get the impression the only reason its being half heartedly take on by the mp is about the money they think they would save.
Advice on living a healthy lifestyle is given with the best intentions. Overweight people are likely to die much earlier than they otherwise would and taking umbrage at being told a fact of life won’t change it. However, as you say, people are free to remain overweight if that’s what they want to do, but hopefully they will accept the potential consequences without complaint. With all the free health advice available no one can blame any government for problems their chosen lifestyle creates. No one can say they didn’t know.
is this a rant about weight or about polititions? Would you be okay if a slim politition told you what to do?
Quite naomi.

I've discovered an incredible way to lose weight. In fact, I was thinking of publishing it and making a fortune, but instead have decided to share it with the world completely gratis via the medium of AB.

Now brace yourself people - it is a bit of a left-field solution which, no doubt, will be scoffed at by some.

Here goes.

Eat less and exercise more!
How about compulsory liposuction as a source of biofuel. Kill two birds with one stone.
And drink less.
Flip-flop,as explained yesterday, people who smoke, drink & eat too much should pay less tax than those that don't.
We're undoubtedly subsidising the puritans who live to a great old age.
If you don't believe me,talk to an actuary.
thin 3rd world diets are rice, fish, fruit & veg. Maybe such alternative dishes one week a month would help dieting ?
I can eat and drink with the best of them and am no stranger to a 'ten-pinter' and a large doner and chips.

But because of this I choose to exercise to keep the weight off, so I'll happily accept a tax rate reduction because of the taxes I pay on my pint, particularly as I won't be bothering the NHS with a weight related illness anytime soon (unlike the lardsters).

Take it a person who has smoked for say 40 years ,they have paid enough tax to pay for their medical care .Were not the goverment going to tax hot food ,now that was really caring or a chance to make money which do you think
If anyone's been watching the Hairy Bikers, they have lost stones by eating low fat food, and drinking more carefully. Life still goes on, you don't have to starve. Unfortunately so many people don't know how to cook these days, many people seem to live off fast food - I am amazed how many folk are in McDonalds at 7am each day.
'Ten pinter' haha.
Reminds me of a mate of mine at the doctors.
"And how much would you say you drink"
My mate,"I don't know,30 or 40 pints."
Doctor,"that's far too much to be drinking every week, Mr S"
"Every week? That's every day"
I must admit he was very overweight & has health probs now.
