When there is a possible infection in an extraction cavity, is it necessary to see a Dentist to receive a prescription for AntiBs, or could a doctor prescribe them?

I tried docs with this problem last year, and they just referred me back to the dentist, saying that it was a dental problem. Dentist left me a prescription at reception.

When I had an abscess a few years ago the dentist gave me a prescription for antibiotics but charged me £25 for the appointment, he wouldn't do it without an appointment! When the same thing happened again I went to my doctor...he happily wrote me a prescription, saved me £25.
