anyone out there had stents (angioplasty)? Whether or not you were sedated for the procedure, what was the experience like for you? And how sore or otherwise troubled were you for how long after?

Dad has had 5 now...in the bile duct....you are heavily sedated and don't remember much..according to dad it all seems to be over quickly and a bit like having a dream...worst part for him is fasting before....

No,never had it, but it is a painless procedure. You do not need sedation, but if you asked specifically for it, then there would be no problem. The stent is inserted into either the wrist or groin after the area has been injected with local anaesthetic. You may feel a " warm glow" in the chest as the stent is manipulated into position, but no big deal. You will probably have to remain in hospital overnight.

I've had it done. It doesn't hurt and actually quite interesting, the surgeon explained what he was going to and asked if I wanted to watch! There were two monitors overhead, one in colour and the other black & white. I watched the one in colour and it was just like watching TV, it didn't even seem to be my body. An overnight stay and home again the following day. There was no pain afterwards and the only thing recommended was not to drive for a week.

vulcan, how blocked were your arteries before the stenting? to what extent can you feel the stents inside you? have you had any tricky moments since you had them inserted? how much difference has the stenting made to you?

princerupe74, sorry, I was away yesterday. I had what was called a silent attack,no pain, but I knew something was wrong as I felt exhausted. The clinic sent me to hospital where I had the attack, again no pain. I then had an angiogram and the surgeon told me there were two arteries partially blocked. He then suggested as I was already on the table, to have them done then and there. I had no sensation of them being inserted and it seemed to take only minutes. After it was done I had to lie still for eight hours although I think that is now shortened to four hours. I was released the following day and was told not to drive for a week. I have never had any" tricky "moments since insertion. It was done in 1998 and for a few years afterwards I had six month check ups but this is now annually. I am still active and very grateful for the skills of the Surgeon. I hope this is some help to you, feel free to ask any other questions.
