I agree that we shouldn't just dismiss 'homework' questions, DocSausage, but I think it's in the student's best interest if we simply point them in the right direction and encourage them to work it out for themselves rather than just give them an answer to copy. As you say there's this " world-wide resource" in addition to the school books and lesson notes they may already have so they should be able to look up this sort of info.
Some of these requests remind me of some of the children I teach Maths to- when they are completely stuck and I try to explain how to solve a problem some say "just tell me the answer". Students rarely learn when copying someone's answer- they learn from looking at the problem, looking at the available information and applying it to the question.

Doc, I agree with you up to a point. I think it's fine for people to get homework help on here. It's perfectly valid research.
However, in order to get positive replies they need to at least demonstrate the gumption to do something more than just paste the exact question they were given into the box provided, with no further explanation or context around it.
That just seems rude, so it's no wonder they get rude replies.
