Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease

6 weeks ago I got a text message from my surgery telling me that they needed a urine sample from me so that they could monitor my disease and medication. I assumed that they had contacted the wrong person as I had never been diagnosed with this, so phoned them back to sort it out.
Last week I received a letter to say that in February 2009 after a blood test that I was diagnosed with this disease and " we request ANNUAL urine samples from patients with this diagnosis"
I was angry when I got the letter, why tell someone that way and since Feb 2009 if I had been taken ill on holiday, would my travel insurance have been invalid? I was rushed into hospital last year and told them that I do not take medication or have any illnesses. A can of worms!

So in Feb 2009 you were diagnosed with Stage 3 CKD and in the subsequent 4 years, your condition has not been monitored.

Not the end of the world........but pretty poor health care.

Thanks sqad, I googled the condition, having previously thought that chronic
meant serious and was more concerned about the "other" person who needed treatment. I'm compiling a letter to my gp and needed a second opinion, regards lack of due care etc, from someone who doesn't know me or my surgery. I 'm not thinking of litigation just fighting for those who can't.

Does sound pretty odd to me, that you were diagnosed with CKD and never informed of that diagnosis for, what? 3 years?

That must surely be some sort of clerical error or oversight.....

I take it then that you have not had occasion to visit your GP in the intervening 3 years?

i had a similar thing - i was asked for a urine sample for PCR because previously, my monthly blood tests had showed ckd although it had improved - no one had ever told me!
Althoug egfr has gone back to "normal" as far as i can see, one can't tell if >60 means 61!

You have been living with this disease for over three years now and you have not been receiving treatment for it in particular. You seem to be coping providing you didn't know about it.

This says something about our bodies - it has a way of coping, and in some cases healing itself.

I would see your GP, firstly to find out what has happened here and why you were informed the way you were, and secondly because with stage 3 CKD in addition to urine testing you need clinical assessment - blood pressure check, cardiovascular risk monitoring, medication advice etc.

Thanks for all of your replies, yes I will be going to see my gp (with sample!) and I want to compose what I need to say.As I said ,I was angry about this and don't want to go with emotional frustration.
I am not taking any medication ,am reasonably fit and active and have not had any symptoms, I did have several blood tests last year ,same practice different gp, and was told that all was ok. Puzzling.
