Tetanus Jabs

I am trying to work out if I now have lifetime cover for Tetanus.

How many Tetanus jabs would I have had as part of the standard immunisation programme you get as a kid and at school?

I'm in my early 40s if that makes a difference.

If you've had five in total you are considered to have lifetime cover (or so the current thinking goes) I can account for at least three and possibly a fourth.....just don't know what I would have had as a baby and at school.

Yes I'm also fairly sure you need boosters every five years.

If you have had 3 "shots" as a child and a booster as an adult, then this should give you lifetime cover.

Is there any way of finding this out? Would a doctor have this information on file?

I read that you need 5, but it's hard to work out how many I've had. I thought a child has two?

I know that I have had three (possibly four) exceptional jabs, dog bites, travel, unpleasant experience with a rusty compass....

On the basis that my Mother was moderately responsible can I assume that as a child I would have received the three childhood shots as standard protocol?

Scrap my answer, I've just read you get the third one between the ages of 11-15.

Check with your surgery about previous jabs, surely it must be listed on your records?

(love the way you describe your mother as moderately responsible!!)

I've just been to the surgery and they only have one listed.

I suspect I may had another one for travelling; definitely one following a dog bite, and another one when I stuck a rusty compass through my finger and it came out the otherside!

I just don't know what the standard protocol was for kids born in the early 70's getting Tetanus jabs.

I'll assume I'm covered.

I always thought they had to be topped up every 10 years but I can only recall ever having had 1 jab and am now 61

This may not apply to you and where you are travelling to, but just something to think about. If you're travelling to a country that 'recommends' you have a tetanus then don't chance it.
If you did ever find yourself in a situation where you might be needing medical treatment, and you hadn't had the jab, then your insurance would be void - in most cases.

Assuming I have had six and possibly seven Tetanus jabs I don't think I need to worry.

I've been told that as I've had 3x shots as a child & 3x shots as an adult, (due to HM Forces losing my records), as well as 4 other shots, due to operational requirements!!, I should never need anymore again.... But, can I donate some immunity to another person??
