I was telling someone the other day how much I miss working out at the gym and the six classes a week I used to do until it was discovered I had wear and tear in my lower back amongst other places, and he said people who do lots of sports don't live any longer than the people that don't...I think he has a point.

what I omitted to say is... and they say exercise is good for you
I guess some traits can go along with lack of exercise in some cases, maybe weight gain, bad eating habits. drinking a lot etc... more in the sense that people who exercise a lot probably tend to take more care of their body generally. I'm being very generalised before someone shouts me down :)

So maybe the sport aspect alone doesn't make much difference but other things might.

I miss doing exercise, more gym classes like dance and step, pilates etc... and swimming. Used to do loads but medical conditions aren't playing nice in that respect right now.

I'd be interested to see where that pearl of wisdom came from. I very much doubt it is true but I'd be interested in any reports/data
You might not live longer but you feel a lot better for exercise. Following even a brisk walk of 30 minutes can change your outlook on life.
I'd like to see the evidence for his statement as I don't beleive it!
Maybe what fruitsalad's friend meant is that you can still die of cancers and heart attacks even though you do exercise.
If you like exercise and feel good afterwards then it shouldn't matter whether it prolongs life or not.
